Measured Building Survey | Residential | Liverpool

Project Scope

This was a building survey where everything needed to be modelled as per LOD 300. The client’s purpose was to renovate the space. The project was to be delivered in 3D, with special attention given to exterior details, wall niches, voids, sweeps, and covering the loft area. The scope demanded accurate representation of architectural details and structural elements to ensure clarity for design and construction. One of the main challenges was modelling the stairs, as the starting stairs were curved and difficult to capture accurately. Additional challenges included working on railings and adjusting their height to match the point cloud.

Equipment Used

  • Laser Scanner RTC360
  • Leica GNSS Receiver GS14
  • Leica Total Station TS16

Duration

  • Site time: 3 days
  • Modelling time: 45 days

1. Detailed Workflow

The workflow involved utilizing sections, 3D views, and plans together to maintain accuracy. Exterior detailing on walls, interior wall sweeps, stairs, and railings were the most time-consuming elements. Accuracy was verified against the point cloud by checking in both sections and 3D views.

2. Key Achievements in the Project

Achieved accuracy levels within approximately 10mm against the point cloud. Successfully modelled complex curved stairs and adjusted railing heights. Delivered high-detail modelling of exterior wall niches, voids, and sweeps.

3. Technical Highlights

The structure was quite fresh and well maintained, located in a peaceful fields area. The loft coverage and exterior detailing added unique aspects to the project.

4. Learning & Improvements

This project followed the established workflow of utilizing sections, 3D, and plans. It reinforced the effectiveness of this method and highlighted the importance of strategic planning when modelling complex elements like curved stairs.
